Our History

AIM didn’t begin with this extensive portfolio of services. The company was formed in 1980 as a partnership between Larry Bennett and James D. Hull, both engineers and surveyors. Mr. Hull saw a need to support Florida’s growing communities after 20 years with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), helping to lead the construction of Interstate 75 in Southwest Florida as the Assistant Resident Engineer for FDOT’s Fort Myers Construction Office.
HIstory 4History 3
AIM’s first contracts involved surveying and mapping the growing but still relatively rural areas in Southwest Florida. In 1986, AIM began providing Construction Engineering & Inspection (CEI) services for FDOT—some of the first consulting CEI work accomplished for FDOT. AIM soon provided CEI services for I-595 in Fort Lauderdale, then one of the largest infrastructure projects in the country. AIM soon expanded to do surveying, transportation design, and CEI work around Florida for FDOT. AIM’s efforts to support FDOT in developing Florida’s transportation network during a time of explosive growth resulted in the expansion and diversification of the company. AIM quickly became involved in the design and construction engineering of many significant road projects. This led the company to diversify into environmental consulting, planning, Project Development & Environment (PD&E) studies, subsurface utility engineering, hydrographic marine geomatics, and remote sensing data collection.
History 5
As the sustainability of Florida’s precious water resources became a bigger challenge, AIM expanded into that area, participating in projects designed to enhance the flow of water in the Everglades. Several flood control projects such as canals, water levies, and water control structures followed as flood control became increasingly important with projects in the 1980s and 1990s. In recent years, the purpose behind such work has been to mitigate flood conditions and restore water quality. In the 2020s, AIM provided construction layout surveying services for the South Florida Water Management’s C-43/Caloosahatchee River West Basin Storage Reservoir, one of the largest restoration and stormwater storage projects in the history of Florida.
Throughout its existence, AIM has focused on helping Florida build more resilient communities. In 2017, AIM’s construction engineers, inspectors, and surveyors were contracted by FDOT to help clear roads and restore traffic signals, signs, and other critical infrastructure after Hurricane Irma. In 2022, AIM’s surveyors were some of the first to respond to the devastation caused by Hurricane Ian on the communities and infrastructure in Southwest Florida.
History 6
AIM, originally headquartered in Lehigh Acres, moved to downtown Fort Myers in 2016. It has technical offices in Bartow, Jacksonville, Orlando, and Tampa, and CEI project offices throughout Florida.

Today, the company is incorporated and led by Jerron K. Hull, PE, as Chief Executive Officer, and one of the company’s two founders, James D. Hull, PE, PLS, CGC, as Chairman of the Board. AIM employs more than 175 people and strives to maintain a family atmosphere and a place that provides long-term career opportunities for all. In a time of constant mergers and acquisitions, we are proud to have remained AIM Engineering & Surveying for all these years.
